Keeping Children Safe Online
The Internet is wonderful tool for finding everything. There are literally billions
of pages of information but this also means there are sites that we do not want our
children to look at.
Here is a list that may help your children stay safer online:
- Agree on what sites they can visit.
- Encourage them to come to you if they find content that they may feel uncomfortable.
- Make it clear that they must not give out personal information to anyone over the
internet which includes passwords, addresses, phone numbers school details etc.
- Never agree to meet someone in person that you met online.
- Never send a person your picture or anything else without first checking with your
parents.
- Place your family computer in the most public area of your home - the living room,
kitchen, or wherever it's easiest for you to monitor their computer use and activities.
- Discuss and set guidelines/rules for computer use with your children. Post these
rules by the computer as a reminder.
- You may be able to set some parental controls within your browser. Internet Explorer
allows you to restrict or allow certain web sites to be viewed on your computer,
and you can protect these settings with a password. To find those options, click
Tools on your menu bar, select Internet Options, choose the Content tab, and click
the Enable button under Content Advisor.
